Eva Golinger, host of the 'Behind the News' issued by RT traveled to the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador to see first hand the environmental damage caused in the region by U.S. oil company Chevron.

The Amazon is the lungs of South America, where there is an extraordinary nature and an immense wealth of strategic resources. The density of the forest, under the surface, is one of the world's most wanted resource : oil.
Called the 'devil's excrement' by Indigenous communities, the exploitation of oil in this continent has brought great benefits, such as development, but has also led to wars, invasions and severe ecological damage.
In Ecuador, where oil extraction today is a careful and environmentally friendly way, is the shadow of the past, when powerful transnationals used this land as their trash and backyard.
This is the case of U.S. oil Texaco, acquired by Chevron after that between 1972 and 1992 extracted 1.500 million barrels of oil from Ecuador; during intentionally poured 19,000 million gallons of waste in the region and shed 17,000 million gallons of oil. Some environmental organizations have described the situation as "the worst oil disaster in the world."
Texaco operated throughout the Amazon district about 300 wells, in each one of these wells had up to eight pools as toxic waste dump.
"Texaco operated throughout the Amazon district about 300 wells in each of these wells had up to eight pools as a toxic waste dump. Around two million hectares were contaminated this directly and indirectly by seepage of contaminated water" said Jose Luis Diaz, an expert from the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador.
Is the 'death hand Chevron', because in the affected areas and no life is a message from the people affected, who are simply seeking justice against a company that has taken advantage of financially area.
It is estimated that this contamination has claimed at least 1,400 lives in the region, discharges related diseases. Many indigenous and farmers are affected by Sequelae, including birth defects and cancers.
"Many of the early founders of our communities have died, among them also my father, who died of cancer," says one of the victims.
The American oil company has refused to pay compensation of $9,500 million, set by the Courts of Ecuador as part of a legal process initiated by Indians and settlers in the Ecuadorian Amazon, accusing the company of serious environmental damage left during the time it operated in that region.
